Maintaining and establishing The Border
The DMZ is a military buffer zone created to suppress any hostilities by either country. Ironically, the Korean demilitarized zone is the most heavily secured border in the world. North Korean forces attempted to cross the border through underground tunnels and North Korean spies. The same could be said about the South Koreans although not much information is given about their spy activity in North Korea. Therefore these activities prevented the Koreans to trust each other. As this led on, psychological borders began to develop between the two groups.
According to the Korean Armistice Agreement, it is the responsibility of both governments to strip the land of land mines, entrapment equipment, and military equipment away from the DMZ.

Patrol Clash
With five South Koreans captured due to them going a 1/4 a mile within the boundary, one could ask if it really broke the armistice agreement. As shown above in the picture with Bob Jagger, the boundaries aren't very specific. Not to mention Korea is a hilly area, therefore you could make the point that these soldiers simply just got lost. If this were the case, the emergence to create a more distinct border enabled the DMZ to come into existence sooner. |
